Was made president in 2008
Talking about Mohammad Nasheed, he is an influential leader. He became the first democratically elected President of Maldives in 2008. After his arrival, the 30-year-old rule of Mamun Abdul Gayoom came to an end. But in the year 2012, he was forced to leave the post under a coup. This led to disputed elections the following year, in which Mohammad Nasheed was defeated by Abdullah Yameen, the half-brother of Mamun Abdul Gayoom (Mohamed Nasheed Political Career). After this, in 2015, Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison after accusing him of terrorism, which also attracted a lot of criticism.

This decision was said to be inspired by politics. Then a year later, he was discharged for treatment in London. He was granted asylum in Britain in 2016. He returned to Maldives after winning the presidential election of Solih in 2018. At that time, Yameen had to face a crushing defeat (About Mohamed Nasheed). In the year 2019, he won parliamentary elections and became a speaker. Which is considered as the second most powerful position in the country. Nasheed has supported global efforts to fight climate change and has also been a vocal critic of religious “extremism” in the Maldives. The reason behind this attack is also being said to be politically motivated.
