Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has accused the previous UPA government of imposing huge debt on the profit making airline company. Scindia said in the Lok Sabha that the profitable Air India started incurring a loss of Rs 20 crore every day due to the policies of the Manmohan Singh government.
During a debate in the Lok Sabha, Scindia said that the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines with completely different work culture, purchase of 111 new aircraft and liberalization of bilateral rights led to the sale of Air India. Earlier, opposition MPs had criticized Scindia for not mentioning the sale of Air India in the one-hour-long reply he gave to the civil aviation ministry on an eight-hour debate on budget allocation.

Scindia said that in the year 2005, Air India was earning a profit of Rs 15 crore annually and Indian Airlines was earning Rs 50 crore. Despite this, Air India bought 111 aircraft for Rs 50-55 thousand crore, which put a huge debt on it. Due to this Air India started incurring a loss of Rs 20 crore every day. In 14 years, the total loss of Air India became 85 thousand crore rupees.

Scindia said that regarding the loss-making Air India, PM Modi decided that it would have to be closed and then the decision of disinvestment was taken so that the government’s money could be saved which could be used in government schemes like Ujjwala and Jal Jeevan Yojana. could. On the question asked about the future of Air India employees, Union Minister Scindia said that under the shareholder agreement, no employee will be fired for one year and after one year they will be offered VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme). He said that after retirement, medical facilities will continue to be available under the health scheme of the Central Government.
