China has warned Bangladesh to join the US-led Quad alliance, saying bilateral relations will be ‘heavily damaged’ if Dhaka becomes part of this anti-Beijing ‘club’. This unexpected warning from Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming has come after the visit of Chinese Defense Minister General Wei Feng. Significantly, on April 27, Fang came to visit Bangladesh. During this time, he had told President Abdul Hamid that Beijing and Dhaka should stop the external powers engaged in building a ‘military alliance’ alliance and establishing ‘dominationism’ in South Asia.
In a digital meeting organized by the Diplomatic Correspondent Association, Bangladesh on Monday, Lee said that it would certainly not be a good idea for Bangladesh to join this small four-nation club (quad) as it would hurt the bilateral relations drastically. He said that the Quod is a ‘small elite group’ which is said to be working against China.
We will decide our foreign policy ourselves
On this disputed statement of the Chinese Ambassador, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momin said that Bangladesh follows a non-aligned and balanced foreign policy and will decide for itself what should be done in accordance with these principles. Momin told reporters on Tuesday that we are an independent and sovereign country. We decide our foreign policy ourselves. However, any country can express its stand.
The Foreign Minister said that he (Chinese Ambassador) represents a country. He can say whatever he wants to say. He may not want to do so (Bangladesh joining the Quad). At the same time, Momin said that no member of the Quad has yet contacted Bangladesh. The news agency United News of Bangladesh (UNB) quoted the foreign minister as saying that the ambassador made this remark in a hurry.
Quad was formed in 2007
The quadrilateral security dialog is called a quad for short. It was formed in the year 2007. This includes India, America, Australia and Japan. During the meeting held on Monday, the Chinese ambassador also expressed the possibility of China’s support to Bangladesh’s efforts on the Teesta River Management Project. The Bangladesh government has not formally submitted any proposal to involve China in this project.
Lee dismissed these concerns that the dispute between Bangladesh and India over water sharing would have an impact on the project. He said that I think it is a legitimate right of the Bangladeshi people to start such a project on the bottom of a common river. Li was quoted as saying that if he makes something in the upper part, then he will have to take feedback from the countries around the lower part. But if you are starting the project at the bottom, then I do not think it is a sensitive issue.
