Mumbai: The long awaited construction of BDD Chawls added a new dimension on Tuesday when the demolition of Naigaon BDD Chawl building number-5B was started. BDD tricks were created over 100 years ago. By redeveloping them, local residents will be given a house of 500 sq ft instead of 180 sq ft. On this occasion, Home Construction Minister Jitendra Awhad said that in the first phase, the construction of the house will be started on the vacant land by demolishing the chawls.
Awhad said that after completing the construction of the buildings soon, houses would be allotted to the residents. MHADA has been appointed as the nodal agency for reconstruction of BDD chawls. Contractor has been appointed on behalf of MHADA to develop the project at Worli and NM Joshi Marg. Construction of buildings has also started in Worli.
23 moves are being redeveloped
In the first phase of Naigaon BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project, 23 chawls are being redeveloped in Plot B. In the second phase the remaining 19 moves in Plot A will be redeveloped. In the first phase of redevelopment of Naigaon BDD chawl, out of 23 chawls in plot B, 175 plots in chawl numbers 5B, 8B and 22B were allotted to BMC’s KEM Hospital for residents. Its place has been given possession of 225 square feet mat area at Bombay Dyeing Transit Camp in Naigaon. 175 employees of KEM Hospital have been shifted to the infection camp and vacated at move numbers 5B, 8B and 22B.

Survey could not be done in Plot B of the project
The survey could not be conducted in Plot B of this project due to protests by some local residents. The demands of these residents will be given due consideration by the government. Residents have shown a positive attitude towards the project. To give concrete shape to the project, the residents of Chawl No. 1A, 2A, 14A, 18A, 19A in Plot A have been surveyed and the final eligibility list of beneficiaries (325 eligible) has been published.
