New Delhi: 66 prisoners and 48 employees have been found infected with Corona virus in three jails of Delhi. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. Sandeep Goel, Director General of Delhi Prisons said, “The condition of none of the infected is critical. We are taking all precautionary measures related to COVID-19.”
According to the data shared by the jail authorities, of the 66 inmates found infected till Monday, 42 are in Tihar and 24 in Mandoli jail. Of the 48 employees found infected, 34 are from Tihar, eight from Mandoli Jail and six from Rohini Jail. To prevent the spread of infection in Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini jail premises, the prison dispensaries have been converted into ‘Covid Care Centres’, officials said.
An oxygen plant set up in Tihar will also start functioning soon. Several ‘medical isolation cells’ have been set up for prisoners who have mild symptoms of infection. At the same time, for the patients who do not have any symptoms of infection, separate ‘isolation rooms’ have been made in the prison premises itself. The authorities said that 120-bedded ‘COVID Care Center’ has been set up in Tihar and 48 beds in Mandoli. The jail administration told that they have formed four committees to look after the prisoners and staff.
Officials said that as far as possible, employees and prisoners are maintaining social distance. Prisoners are not allowed to come out of their wards most of the time and awareness campaigns are being conducted regularly to make them aware about the rules related to COVID-19. According to the data, till January 7, there were a total of 18,528 prisoners in three jails in Delhi. Of these, 12,669 were in Tihar, 4,018 in Mandoli and 1,841 in Rohini.
