Chandigarh: A team of the Center probing the alleged security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab reached Ferozepur on Friday, while a report submitted by the state to the Center said that the incident An FIR has been registered in connection with the case and the state government has constituted a two-member committee to probe the lapses.
The three-member committee of the Center will get details about the developments of the Prime Minister’s visit on January 5. The team first reached Pyarayana flyover near Firozpur and held talks with senior officials of Punjab Police and administration. The panel is headed by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat and includes Joint Director of Intelligence Bureau Balbir Singh and IG S Suresh of Special Security Group.

The Center has asked the committee to submit its report at the earliest. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Secretary Anirudh Tiwari has submitted a report to the Central Government regarding the incident of security lapse during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Punjab. The report states that an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident and the state government has constituted a two-member committee to probe the lapses.
Official sources said on Friday that Tiwari has shared a series of information about the incidents that took place during the Prime Minister’s visit on Wednesday. The Punjab government on Thursday constituted a two-member committee to probe the security lapse. The committee will submit its report in three days.
It is worth noting that due to blockade by the protesters in Punjab on Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s convoy was stuck for some time on the flyover in Ferozepur. Thereafter he returned to Delhi from Punjab without attending any program including a rally. The Union Home Ministry had also directed the state government to file a report immediately, saying it had not ensured necessary deployment. Home Minister Amit Shah had said that such negligence in the security process during the visit of the Prime Minister is completely unacceptable and accountability will be fixed.
A major political controversy has arisen due to this incident. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that the ruling Congress in Punjab “tried to physically harm” the prime minister, while other parties also attacked the state government over the law and order issue. The Center has also constituted a three-member committee on Thursday to probe the matter. (agency)
