A Boston civil rights group on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit in opposition to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, arguing that the governor and others broke quite a few legal guidelines once they shipped dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard.
This lawsuit submitting comes a day after a Texas sheriff introduced that he’s launching an investigation into transporting the migrants from San Antonio to Massachusetts, saying the immigrants have been “lured” and “preyed upon.”
DeSantis has claimed accountability for relocating the 48 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, and has pledged to proceed transporting migrants to sanctuary locations.
Many Massachusetts politicians and advocate teams have been calling for an investigation into DeSantis, together with Lawyers for Civil Rights — which on Tuesday filed a federal civil rights class-action lawsuit in opposition to the Florida governor, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue, the State of Florida, and their accomplices.
The lawsuit was filed in Massachusetts U.S. District Court. The migrants have been lured to board airplanes and cross state traces beneath false pretenses, Lawyers for Civil Rights argues within the lawsuit.
“This cowardly political stunt has placed our clients in peril. Numerous laws were brazenly violated to secure media headlines,” stated Oren Sellstrom, the litigation director of Lawyers for Civil Rights, which is offering free authorized help to the migrants.
The 48 immigrants from Venezuela have been informed, beneath false pretenses, that they’d have work alternatives, training and immigration help in the event that they boarded the planes, based on the lawsuit. Once the planes landed in Martha’s Vineyard, those that had lured them disappeared. State and island officers have been blindsided as effectively.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a category of affected migrants, together with the immigrants stranded in Martha’s Vineyard, and Alianza Americas, a community of migrant-led organizations supporting immigrants throughout the U.S.
“For the governor of Florida to cynically use recently arrived immigrants who have applied for asylum in the U.S. to advance a hate-driven agenda intended to create confusion and rejection throughout the country, is not only morally despicable, but utterly contrary to the best traditions of humanitarian protection embraced by most Americans,” stated Oscar Chacon, Alianza Americas’ government director.
“That is why we have taken the steps to legally challenge what we view as not only a morally reprehensible action, but what we believe is also illegal,” Chacon added.
After the Martha’s Vineyard neighborhood and organizations stepped as much as assist the 48 migrants for just a few days final week, the state moved the immigrants to Joint Base Cape Cod — which is best arrange with assets for short-term housing and help.
