Mumbai: In view of the rapidly increasing population of MMR, the work of Panvel-Karjat Suburban Train Route has been started for the convenience of the passengers. The work of connecting Panvel directly to Karjat by local is being done through MRVC. It may take 4 years to start local service from Panvel station on Harbor route to Karjat station of Central Railway. The work of new double line from Panvel to Karjat under MUTP-3A has been started.
MRVC CPRO Sunil Udasi said that about 74.40 percent of the required land for the Panvel to Karjat local corridor has been acquired. About 136 hectares of land is required for the total length of 29.6 km. Of these, more than 101 hectares of land has been found.
2812 crore project
According to CPRO Udasi, under the guidance of MRVC KCMD Ravi Agarwal, the work of Panvel-Karjat Local Corridor has started expeditiously. It was told that the target is to complete the work by December 2024. Local service can start from March 2025. Under this project of 2812 crores, there will be 2 flyovers, 3 tunnels and 44 small and big bridges in a route of 29.6 km. Apart from this, 21 ROB, RUB and FOB will be made.

Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk and Karjat will be built between Panvel and Karjat. There will be 3 tunnels on this route, while the longest bridge will be 2.5 km. This multipurpose rail corridor will connect these three taluks of Panvel, Khalapur and Karjat in Raigad district. It is noteworthy that Panvel to Karjat is single track, which is used for long distance trains or goods trains. To reach Karjat or Panvel, local travelers have to travel via Thane or Kurla. It takes a long time to reach both the places by road. Lakhs of people will benefit from Panvel to Karjat Sidhi local.
Approved in December 2016
By the way, MUTP-3 was approved only in December 2016. Under this, the work of double track from Panvel to Karjat including Kalwa to Airoli elevated road, Virar to Dahanu track was included. 575 crore has been allocated to MRVC in the new budget. Nerul-Kharkopar-Uran on Central Railway is aiming to open this fourth local corridor by next year.
