This project of the United States was told by Leonard Refill, former executive at NASA in 2000. Who led the project in 1958.
America wanted to bomb the moon (symbolic photo)
Project A-119: The Cold War period has ended, but the stories of that time are still heard. At that time, America and the Soviet Union were vying to overtake each other in every field, even space was not untouched by this. The US Air Force prepared a top secret plan in the year 1958, which was named ‘A Study of Lunar Research Flights’. It is also known as Project ‘A-119’. The purpose of this project was to drop the atomic bomb on the moon, so that answers related to some of the mysteries of science subjects, Planetary Astronomy and Astrogeology can be found.
The US had planned to drop the atomic bomb on the surface instead of the lunar creator, so that its glowing light could be seen with the naked eye from the earth itself. America wanted to do this to show its strength and prove how much it has the ability to do. That is, in order to increase the morale of the people of his own country, preparations were made to do so because then the Soviet Union was winning the space race. The Soviet was also working on a similar project. However, this project was also never completed and it was later canceled.
Why a canceled project?
Regarding the cancellation of Project A-119, ‘US Air Force officials had said that there are more risks than its benefits.’ And landing on the moon will be a more popular achievement in the eyes of people in America and internationally. If there was work on this project, a military base would also be built on the space. The Soviet Union was also working on one such project, named E-4. However, this too could not be successful. This project of America was told by Leonard Refill, former executive at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the year 2000. Who led the project in 1958.
Documents kept secret for 45 years
Another reason behind the non-completion of the project was the fear of negative public backlash. American astronomer Carl Sagan was also a part of this project team. They had to predict the effects of nuclear explosions in vacuum and low gravity. Along with this, the scientific value of the project was also to be evaluated. Documents related to the A-119 project were kept confidential for about 45 years. Despite this disclosure made by the refill, the Government of America has not officially accepted its involvement in this study till date.
