New Delhi: The cost of charging electric vehicles can be very high. In an effort to reduce this cost, IIT researchers have invented a new technology. With this new technology, the charging cost will be reduced to almost half of the on-board charging technology. This technology has been developed on a lab scale at IIT BHU with the joint efforts of IIT Guwahati, Bhubaneswar.
According to the team of IIT, the country’s leading EV manufacturer is already showing interest in this technology and a company is willing to develop its commercial product. This new technology of IIT can be easily installed in existing electric vehicles.

The exercise of commercialization of this new technology is intensifying but it is still in its upgradation phase. Rajeev Kumar Singh, Principal Project Investigator, IIT BHU, told PTI, “The rising prices of petrol and diesel in the country are worrying for the common man. Amidst the rising cost of petroleum products and rising pollution levels, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the best alternative to convention IC locomotives.”
He further said that due to lack of high power off board charging infrastructure, vehicle manufacturers have to provide on board charger in the vehicle itself, in which the owner of the vehicle can come to these outlets to charge the electric vehicle but this increases their cost. Is. According to a professor associated with the project, the use of this new technology reduces the need for an additional power electronics interface for a propulsion mode, reducing its components by 50%.
Due to the modification of the charger, it acts like a charger in charging mode and inverter in propulsion mode, which will reduce the cost by 40 to 50 percent. According to Singh, “The cost reduction in chargers will also bring down the cost of EVs later on. In this way, the proposed technology is giving low cost technology for EVs.”
