The fantasy of flying cars is getting closer to reality with each passing year. Many companies are working on this technology and have also made prototype prototypes to take flying tests. With more progress over time, flying cars will soon be rolled out in cities across the world.
Hyundai European Operations CEO Michael Kaul is confident that flying cars will become a reality by the end of this decade. “We believe this is part of the future solution to introduce a truly prototype, smart mobility solution,” he said at an event organized by the industry group Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Flying taxi will run on electric battery
Hyundai has made significant investments in Urban Air Mobility. The South Korean carmaker is developing a flying taxi that is powered by electric batteries and can carry five to six people from highly congested urban centers to airports. Call believes that flying cars will help ease congestion in cities and even help reduce carbon emissions. “Definitely by the end of this decade, urban airmobility will provide great opportunities to decongest cities… be it intra-city or inter-city air mobility,” he said.
Hyundai will invest 150 crores
Believing in its future earnings, the automaker has already promised to invest around $1.5 billion (Rs 150 crore) in urban air mobility by 2025. There is even a dedicated Urban Air Mobility Division headed by Jaiwon Shin, a former NASA engineer. Hyundai showcased its first flying car concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2020. The S-A1 electric plane was built in partnership with ride-hailing platform Uber.
Hyundai is building an airport without a runway
Hyundai is also working to develop the UK’s first airport without a runway, designed specifically for aircraft capable of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL). The airport is set to open in Coventry later this year. The airport will facilitate flights of air taxis and automatic delivery drones.
