In fact, in the 1980s and early 1990s, the name “Maruti” became synonymous with the Maruti 800. The car was based on the Suzuki Fronte SS80 and was powered by a three-cylinder 800cc engine. Being an 800cc engine, it was given the name Maruti 800. Although nothing was ever said from the company about this name, but this is the belief about it. You can still see this in the names of some motorcycles in which the engine capacity is added along with the name of the vehicle like Bajaj CT 100, HF Deluxe 100 etc.

This car is one of the most successful and popular cars in India. It was called the people’s car because it fulfilled the dream of having a car in the house of the people. Due to the affordable price and best features according to that era, people liked it very much. Maruti 800 was initially launched for just Rs 47,500. During the launch of this car, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had launched Maruti’s factory in Gurgaon. The factory claimed that it was making a new car every 800th minute. During the launch, Maruti Suzuki had claimed that this car will run 25.95 km in a liter if it is driven at a speed of 50Kmph. Indira Gandhi had previously given the keys of Maruti 800 to Harpal Singh and became the owner of the first Maruti 800 to be launched in India.
The name and launch of these cars of the company are special
After launching the Maruti 800 in India, the company planned to enter different segments and then launched the Omni minivan in 1984. After this, the iconic off-roader Gypsy was introduced in 1985 and then a few years later in 1990, the company introduced the first sedan car of Maruti Suzuki which was named Maruti 1000. This car had an engine of about 1000 cc. In 1994, the company upgraded this car and introduced its facelift model which is known as Esteem. This car actually laid the foundation for sedans in India and along with this the company also launched the Zen in 1993 which became quite popular in India.
Maruti Suzuki Alto beats Maruti 800
The production of Maruti Suzuki Alto started in 2000. This car was specially made by the company for the Indian market. Its Indian first version was the fifth version of the Japanese Alto and the second generation Alto was specially made for the Indian market. If we look at the name of this car, then 800 was added in front of it as well. In 2004, this car gained a lot of popularity and left Maruti Suzuki behind and almost since then it has been included in the best selling car of the company. If we talk about Maruti 800, then its production was stopped in 2015 but still people like it very much and it is sold a lot in the second hand market.
