Britain’s Foreign Secretary of Britain Dominic Raab accused him of violating the Chinese-British Joint Declaration on Saturday in the backdrop of China’s growing control over Hong Kong. Raab said that the radical restrictions imposed on participation in the Hong Kong Election System are part of a plan to suppress and harass all voices criticizing China’s policies.
Raab said in a statement that this step of China is a violation of the ‘declaration’ for the third time in less than nine months. Foreign Secretary said that if the Chinese administration continues to take action, now I have to tell that Britain believes that China is constantly disregarding the joint declaration. This shows the growing gap between China’s promises and its action.
What is the China-UK agreement
Explain that there was an agreement between Britain and China in 1984 under which Hong Kong was freed from British rule and went under Chinese rule in 1997. Under the agreement, there was talk of giving autonomy, civil rights and independence to Hong Kong for at least 50 years.
A few days ago a top Chinese official said that the pro-Beijing committee, which selected the leader of Hong Kong, would also elect some members of the city’s legislature. This step will be taken as part of the reform plan and this will further increase the interference of China in Hong Kong politics.
China is increasing control over Hong Kong
He had said that the Election Committee would have the right to nominate all the candidates of Legislative Council (Legco) of Hong Kong. Wang said that the size, structure and method of formation of the current election committee will also be changed and the election committee will be appointed by the Chief Executive Officer.
Wang Chen, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (China’s parliament), informed about this in the annual session in Beijing on Friday. In view of the thrust of the pro-democracy campaign in Hong Kong, a draft proposal has been proposed to change the electoral system there. The implementation of this decision will further increase China’s control over Hong Kong.
