Double Booker Prize winner Dame Hilary Mantel, creator of the epic Wolf Hall trilogy, has died aged 70.
In a press release, her writer 4th Estate books stated: “We are heartbroken on the loss of life of our beloved creator, Dame Hilary Mantel, and our ideas are together with her family and friends, particularly her husband, Gerald.
“This is a devastating loss and we can only be grateful she left us with such a magnificent body of work.”
She gained the Booker Prize for Wolf Hall, and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies.

“There was always a slight aura of otherworldliness about her, as she saw and felt things us ordinary mortals missed, but when she perceived the need for confrontation she would fearlessly go into battle.
“And all of that towards the backdrop of power well being issues, which she handled so stoically. We will miss her immeasurably, however as a shining gentle for writers and readers she leaves a unprecedented legacy. Our ideas exit to her beloved husband Gerald, household and buddies,” he added.
