The Delta variant of COVID-19 has reached 85 countries. World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the delta variant is by far the most infectious variant. He warned that the unavailability of the vaccine in poor countries is proving helpful in the spread of the delta variant. The WHO chief said, there is more concern about the delta variant at the global level and the WHO is also worried about it.
Expressing concern about this, the WHO chief said, restrictions are being eased in some countries. In such a situation, we can see the increase in the spread of variants. He said, more cases would mean more people would have to be hospitalised. This will increase the pressure on health workers and health services, which can increase the death toll. WHO chief said, rich countries do not want to give vaccine to developing countries immediately. They (poor countries) are disappointed because they don’t have vaccines. If not a vaccine, what would you share?
Delta variant is spreading among people who have not vaccinated
Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, COVID-19 Technical Lead at WHO, said, the delta variant is dangerous and is spreading faster than the alpha variant. He said, cases are declining in many European countries, but a lot of things are happening in this whole region. Like large-scale sports events, religious programs and parties in people’s homes. Such a move will have some consequences. In such a situation, the delta variant is spreading rapidly among those who have not got the vaccine.
Delta variants reached 11 countries in two weeks
This week the WHO said that the delta variant is the most infectious variant of COVID-19 and cases related to it are being reported in countries around the world. The COVID-19 weekly epidemiological update released by the WHO on June 22 states that globally, the alpha variant has been found in 170 countries, the beta variant in 119 countries, the gamma variant in 71 countries and the delta variant in 85 countries.
Globally, the Delta variant has been found in 85 countries, the update said. Apart from this, it is constantly being found in new countries. It has been found in 11 countries in the last two weeks. WHO has considered four variants of corona – alpha, beta, gamma and delta – as ‘variants of concern’ and they are spreading rapidly. These are constantly being found in other countries.
