US President Joe Biden names Indian-American Rashad Hussain as first Muslim religious freedom ambassador

US President Joe Biden has named Rashad Hussain, an Indian-American, as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Rashad Hussein may be the first Muslim to lead US diplomacy to advance religious freedom. Rashad Hussain is the Director of Partnership and Global Engagement at the National Security Council.

A White House statement said he previously served as senior counsel in the National Security Division of the Justice Department. During the Obama administration, Rashad served as the US special envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for strategic counterterrorism communications and as a White House deputy aide.

Rashad Hussain worked with multilateral organizations

As an envoy, Rashad Hussein worked with multilateral organizations, including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations, foreign governments, and civil society organizations, including education, entrepreneurship, health, international security, science and technology, and other fields. Huh. Rashad also led efforts to combat anti-Semitism and protect religious minorities in Muslim-majority countries.

Hussain holds a law degree from Yale Law School and a master’s degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University. Meanwhile, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) praised the Biden administration for appointing Rashad Hussein as the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.
