Kyiv. A spokesman for Europe’s largest nuclear power plant said a fire broke out after a Russian power plant was attacked in the southern Ukrainian city of Enerhodar. A government official told The Associated Press (AP) that radiation levels in the area around the Zaporizhia nuclear plant were found to be elevated.
About 25 percent of the country’s electricity is produced at this place. The official gave this information on the condition of anonymity, as the information has not been made public yet. Plant spokesman Andrey Tuz told Ukrainian television that fighting was urgently needed to extinguish the fire.

Russian forces have been fighting since Thursday for control of the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar, which houses Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, and has also struggled to cut off the country from the sea. The country’s leaders have called on citizens to wage a guerrilla war against the invaders. Enerhodar produces one-fourth of the country’s electricity. The fighting there comes as Russia and Ukraine reached a tentative agreement in the second round of talks to create a safe corridor for the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
