Dubai: United Arab Emirates (UAE) (UAE) late on Wednesday night destroyed several drones fired towards the country midway and destroyed. The UAE Army said that this is the fourth attack in recent weeks. The military did not clarify who targeted the drones, but suspicions are being cast on pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen, given recent incidents.
Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for several recent drone and missile attacks on the UAE. The Emirates Defense Ministry said in a brief statement on Twitter at midnight on Wednesday that it had destroyed three “enemy drones” that targeted the United Arab Emirates late last night. The ministry, without giving details, said the drone was intercepted “away from the populated area”.
The Houthi have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition that also includes the United Arab Emirates since rebels captured the Yemeni capital Sanaa in 2015. Significantly, Yemen’s Houthi rebels first carried out drone and missile attacks on the emirate last month. The last two airstrikes were halted jointly by US and Emirates forces. One of these attacks was carried out during the historic visit of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to the Gulf Arab country.
