The vessel belongs to the China Merchants Port Holding Company. It is a commercial vessel loaded with the radioactive material ‘Uranium Hexafluoride’.
Radioactive Material Found on Chinese Vessel in Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka has asked him to leave Hambantota Port after a radioactive substance was found on a Chinese ship. Officials gave information about this matter on Wednesday. Anil Ranjit, the top official of the Sri Lanka Nuclear Energy Authority (SLAEA), said that the ship was going from Rotterdam port to China when it encountered technical flaws and reached Hambantota port. SLAEA said that at the time of anchoring at the port, the vessel had not informed about the radioactive material being loaded.
The ship belongs to the China Merchants Port Holding Company. Ranjit said that it was a commercial vessel on which the radioactive material ‘uranium hexafluoride’ was loaded. He said that this substance acts as a fuel in nuclear power plants. Uranium Hexachloride is considered a hazardous substance. This substance is usually sent from one country to another. But according to Sri Lankan rules, prior permission is required for this.
Discussion held with Ministry of Defense
Anil Ranjit further said, ‘After discussing this matter with the Ministry of Defense, we have asked the ship to leave the port (Chinese Vessel in Sri Lanka Port).’ Leader of the Opposition Sajit Premdas has raised this issue in Parliament on Wednesday. He said that the navy had not given permission to inspect the ship there. But looking at the government, it seems that he is under pressure from some diplomatic mission. However, he did not name any mission.
Premdas further said, ‘I ask the government to investigate this. This is a very serious issue, it is something that can affect the life of our community. Significantly, many other countries also keep worrying about China from time to time. At this time, the Chinese Vessels in Philippines are also very angry about Chinese ships. More than 200 ships have been encamped here in China for the past several months in the area of the South China Sea, which the Philippines claims.
