Pakistan bans Barbie: Cinema halls throughout Pakistan’s Punjab briefly halted the screening of Hollywood film Barbie. The film was later screened with a number of cuts.
Authorities mentioned that Barbie wanted to delete a number of “objectionable scenes” which are opposite to Pakistan’s society.
Ban solely in Punjab
News concerning Barbie’s ban started circulating when the Punjab Censor Board denied a No Objection Certificate to this movie. India Today says that some folks mentioned they have been requested to get a refund after the film stopped screening halfway.
Major cinemas in Lahore, equivalent to Universal Cinemas, Cue Cinema and Cine Star weren’t working Barbie, which launched on July 21. This fuelled speculations that the Punjab authorities had banned the film.
Sources instructed the Express Tribune that the Punjab Censor Board didn’t ban Barbie however had demanded that a number of objectionable dialogues be edited out.
Barbie’s Pakistan distributor HKC Entertainment didn’t agree with these modifications. However, on Saturday, the movie bought a certification from the Bard after the “objectionable dialogues which promoted homosexuality” have been deleted.
Pakistan is an Islamic nation and doesn’t enable homosexuality in any type.
However, Barbie was being screened in Sindh and Islamabad with none cuts.
Widespread criticism
Many Pakistanis criticised the momentary banning of Barbie.
One consumer wrote on Twitter, “Just heard that Barbie’s banned in Pakistan? I watched [the] movie yesterday. There’s literally nothing in that movie to ban. No swear words. No nudity. No obscenity. Not even any LGTBQ+ characters. Thematically, the film is about women being able to do anything they want, which I guess is a big threat to the fabric of our society,”
Pakistan has banned a number of movies that allegedly assault the nation’s social and ethical cloth. Last November, the nation banned Joyland- Pakistan’s entry for the 2013 Oscars- as a result of this film “offended Muslim sensibilities.
