Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has gained the distinguished Nobel Peace Prize for 2023.
The 51-year-old campaigner was given the award “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.
Ms Mohammadi was jailed for 16 years by a revolutionary courtroom in 2016 for “establishing and running the illegal splinter group” Legam – which opposed the loss of life penalty.
Her imprisonment prompted condemnation from the worldwide group on the time.
Ms Mohammadi was reported to have gone on starvation strike with British-Iranian nationwide Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe whereas serving her sentence at Tehran’s Evin jail.
