Myanmar to Release Thousands of People From Jail: Myanmar’s military government has begun releasing some 2,300 prisoners since Wednesday, including activists detained during protests against a military coup in February and journalists reporting on the protests. Inmates were taken by buses from Yangon’s Insein prison, where their friends and family had been waiting for their release since morning.
Jaw Jaw, head of the Yangon Regional Prison Department, confirmed that more than 720 people had been released from prison. Political prisoners have been kept in this jail for decades. It has come to the fore that not all activists and journalists have been released (Myanmar Military Government). Deputy Information Minister Major General Jae Min Tun had earlier said that around 2,300 prisoners would be released across the country.
There were protests in the country
He told China’s Xinhua news agency that the released prisoners included those who participated in the demonstration but did not commit violence or incite riots. After the coup in this country in February, a large number of people took to the streets and protested (Protests in Myanamar). People demanded restoration of democracy and release of politicians. Taking action against them, the military government shot and killed more than 700 people. The army had massacred many cities of the country.
5200 people are in custody
After the coup, arrest warrants were issued against about 2000 people. It is being said that at present 5200 people have been kept in custody. The country’s big leader Aung San Suu Kyi was kept under house arrest, making many allegations. Suu Kyi, the 76-year-old Nobel laureate, is being heard in many cases. He has also been accused of corruption and violating the rules of Corona virus. After the arrival of the military government, whatever things are said on behalf of Suu Kyi, only her lawyers tell. Her lawyer had told that Suu Kyi has asked people to stay united.
