New restrictions in Taiwan again
According to Chen Chien-jin, an epidemiologist and former vice-president of the island nation, cases have increased in Taiwan due to the more easily transmitted form of the virus, which first appeared in Britain. Schools, gyms and pools are closed in Taipei and more than five people inside and more than 10 people are prohibited from gathering outside. All schools have been closed here since Wednesday (Asia Coronavirus Restrictions). Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has appealed to the public to stay away from public places. Tsai said, “We will continue to strengthen our healing capacity.” He said that the vaccine is coming from abroad.
Lockdown till 7 June in Malaysia
Unexpectedly, a month-long lockdown has been imposed till June 7, amid a sharp increase in cases in Malaysia. This is the second nationwide lockdown in just a year and since January there has been a four-fold increase in cases of infection in the country, after which the total cases in the country have now crossed 47,400 (Asia Coronavirus News). Interstate travel and social activities are banned there, schools are closed and restaurants can only provide takeout service. Singapore has implemented stringent measures to maintain social distance by 13 June, limiting public functions to two and banning eating in restaurants.
New cases were also found in China
China has set up checkpoints at toll booths, airports and railway stations in Liaoning Province, where four more cases were reported on Tuesday (Coronavirus Cases in China). In Thailand, there were 35 deaths due to the infection on Tuesday, the highest since the outbreak began. The death toll in the country has risen to 649, of which 555 have occurred in the new wave. Approximately three-quarters of Thailand’s total of 1,16,000 cases have been reported since April. The lockdown was imposed in April in Manila due to escalating cases. So far, more than 1.1 million cases of Corona virus infection have occurred in the Philippines, while more than 18,800 deaths have occurred.
