Member of boat smuggling gang found hiding in attic by German police dog

A suspected member of a world trafficking ring which allegedly smuggled 1000’s of individuals throughout the English Channel has been arrested in Germany.

The 41-year-old German citizen was detained following a raid on a farm in Lotte, Westphalia, northwest Germany, within the early hours of Tuesday.

The man, named as Dirk P by Der Spiegel, is accused of storing tools corresponding to inflatable boats, boat motors and life jackets on his property.

He can be suspected of “inhumane and life-threatening smuggling as well as membership in a criminal organisation”, based on a European Arrest Warrant issued by authorities in Belgium.

When officers arrived on the farm this morning, the suspect fled.

A police canine later discovered him hiding within the attic.

Today’s arrest follows the most important ever worldwide operation focusing on a gang accused of shifting as much as 10,000 individuals throughout the Channel in small boats.

A complete of 39 suspected smugglers or supporters had been arrested and 52 properties had been searched within the joint sting by authorities within the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in July 2022.
