The tunnel was closed due to flood waters in the city of Zhuhai, located in Guangdong province. Due to this, 14 laborers are trapped inside it.

Flooding in Tunnel was filled due to floods during the night in a tunnel being built in Southern China. Because of this 14 construction workers working inside the tunnel have become trapped. Since Thursday morning, the rescue team is busy in evacuating these laborers. The emergency management department said in an online post that the floods hit Zuhai city at 3.30 am. The cause of the floods is being investigated.
A command center has been set up to assist and rescue teams from agencies from several cities have been dispatched to the spot. Zhuhai is a coastal city in Guangdong province, near Macao, at the mouth of the Pearl River delta. It was one of China’s earliest special economic zones when the ruling Communist Party began opening up the economy nearly 40 years ago.
13 miners died in Shanxi province last month
Earlier, a major mine accident happened in June, when workers were trapped in an iron ore mine in Shanxi province, located in the northern part of the country. All the 13 miners trapped in this mine died. On June 10, the Dahongkai mine in Daixian County was flooded. After this the bodies of the miners were taken out from the well there. According to the local headquarters of the agency that carried out the rescue operation, the rescue team of 1,084 personnel worked for six consecutive days. Even after this, the lives of the miners could not be saved.
Negligence is taken regarding safety in mines in China
Xinhua news agency had reported that the police have detained 13 suspects in this case, who were accused of negligence. An investigation was started to find out the cause of the accident. China’s coal mines are considered the most dangerous in the world. In the year 2009, China had the highest number of mine accidents in the whole world. According to official figures released by the Government Security Administration, 2,631 coal miners were killed. Most of the accidents happen due to non-compliance of safety rules. There is no air to breathe in these mines. Nor do miners have any equipment to control a fire when it starts.
