Upcycling Food Explained: Would you like to eat something that is made from recycled food products? If there is not much information about this, this thing may seem strange. Rodney Holcomb and Daniel Belmer of Oklahoma State University of America have given detailed information in this matter (Upcycling Food Meaning). ‘Upcycling’, they say, is a decades-old concept of using low-cost foods or processed food by-products to make new food products.
Examples of this may be sausages, which are made from leftover pieces of meat, and jams or jellies, which are made from overripe fruits. As economists and food engineers, we have worked with food companies to reduce food wastage. Globally, more than a third of food production is wasted somewhere between the farm and the consumer’s dustbin.
Food is wasted around the world
Food is wasted in the fields due to improper storage or in the food distribution process. Worldwide, more than 20 percent of fruits and vegetables are wasted, while green leafy vegetables and fruits account for more than 40 percent. In the United States alone, fruit waste has been estimated at between $200 billion and $300 billion in recent years. Both the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization have emphasized on avoiding food insecurity by reducing wastage of food.

Waste of food also creates environmental problems. The FAO estimated that food waste accounts for about eight percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. When food is wasted, natural resources such as water, energy and land resources needed to grow crops are also wasted. There are many such food items in the market right now that can be reused.
How can you save food?
For example, the fruit pulp that remains after extracting fruit juices adds flavor and nutrition to snack food products. What is left after grinding wheat and making flour, it is included in the breakfast cereals i.e. cereals in the morning (Upcycling Food Recipes). Due to which the amount of vitamins, minerals and fiber increases. Along with this, the powder made from the waste of fruits and vegetables can be used in beverages.

The consumer’s choice on any food product depends on the taste, convenience and price. Food processors will have to create new products made from leftover food items to save money.
