Homes have been evacuated as a bomb disposal squad investigates a “suspicious item” present in a home in north-west England.
Cumbria Police declared a “major incident” after they found the merchandise on Wednesday afternoon following issues for the welfare of a person in Steel Street, Ulverston.
A 46-year-old man was arrested and is being held in custody.
Quite a lot of residents had been instructed to depart their properties, a 100 metre cordon was put in place and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal crew was referred to as to evaluate a “potential electrical issue”.
Chief Superintendent Mick Bird stated: “A significant incident has been declared to coordinate the exercise of quite a few companies in offering a complete response to help residents who’ve been evacuated from their properties this night.
“An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is ongoing with their assessment, which may last a number of hours.
“The precedence of this response is to make sure the security of all residents. As quickly as it’s deemed secure to take action, residents shall be allowed to return to their properties.
“I would like to thank once again those impacted by this evacuation for their continued patience.”
Westmorland & Furness Council has opened a reception centre at Ulverston Leisure Centre for many who have been evacuated and require lodging.
