Less than two years ago, the two countries had talked about establishing open relations with each other. This is also a historic day for both the countries because UAE is the first Gulf country to open an embassy in Israel. In the opening ceremony, Israeli President Isaac Herzog called it a milestone.
He said the opening of the embassy “is an important milestone in our shared journey towards a future of peace, prosperity and security for the Middle East”. Two weeks before this, in June, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid visited the UAE, where he inaugurated the Israeli embassy in Abu Dhabi. Israel and the UAE formally established diplomatic relations last year after decades of secret relations.
The agreement was signed at the White House
The two countries had signed an agreement in September on the White House lawn of the US. The embassy of the United Arab Emirates is located in the heart of Tel Aviv’s business district, in the tower of the Israeli Stock Exchange. Most countries open their embassies in Tel Aviv because the status of Jerusalem is disputed. Although the US established its embassy in Jerusalem in 2018. Israel took control of East Jerusalem during the 1967 war. He called it his part which was not even recognized by the international community.
