This will be the first time since 1997 that a foreign leader has addressed the cabinet. In 1997, Bill Clinton addressed the cabinet. Britain is currently battling the delta variant of Corona and is facing the threat of a possible third wave of infection. During this, the issue of travel between Britain and the EU will also be included in the talks as Merkel is pressurizing EU leaders to make strict segregation mandatory for people coming from Britain. Merkel says this is necessary to prevent the more contagious delta form of the virus from spreading. Queen Elizabeth II is also scheduled to meet Merkel.
Ahead of the chancellor’s visit, Johnson said Britain and Germany share a strong friendly relationship and a common view on many issues. This will be Merkel’s 22nd visit to Britain after taking over as chancellor. Earlier, Merkel and Johnson had met in Britain during the G-7 summit.
