According to media reports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that a Boeing 737-200 cargo plane had to make an emergency landing at sea near Honolulu early Friday after two pilots reported an engine failure. Both pilots were rescued after the US Coast Guard (USCG) made an emergency landing at around 1:30 pm local time.
In a statement, the FAA said the pilots reported an engine fault shortly after beginning their 33-minute journey from Honolulu to the regional Kahului Airport on the island of Maui. CNBC reported that according to audio from the tower at Daniel’s Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, one of the pilots complained of loss of control with the “number 1 engine” and that the plane had only two hours of fuel left.
Team sent to search for pilots
According to the report, the pilot said that his second engine is also likely to fail as it has become very hot. Shortly after, the Air Traffic Controller alerted for the low altitude and the pilot asked the Coast Guard to inform. The USCG said that after receiving a report from Honolulu Air Traffic Control regarding the Boeing 737 landing at sea, it dispatched a helicopter, a cutter, a rescue plane and a 45-foot boat to search for the two pilots.
Condition of both pilots stable
A Dolphin crew on the scene rescued one pilot, while a Honolulu Fire Department rescue boat pulled another out of the water, the USCG statement said. USCG spokeswoman Lt. Commander Karin Evelyn said in an email that both pilots were in “good condition”, the New York Times reported.
The USCG said in a statement that he was later sent to hospital and is now in a stable condition. According to the New York Times report, Commander Evelyn said that the wreckage of the plane currently remains at the landing site and the USCG will evaluate the pollution. The Boeing 737-200 was built in 1975 and is over 100 feet tall. The aircraft can be made to seat up to 100 passengers.
