Dissident republicans are claiming to be in possession of details about the Police Service of Northern Ireland officers revealed in a knowledge breach, the pressure’s chief constable has stated.
In a press convention, Simon Byrne stated he was “deeply sorry” over what he described as an “industrial scale breach of data that has gone into the public domain”.
He was talking after taking questions at a gathering of the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
Mr Byrne stated an “early worst-case scenario that we have been dealing with is that third parties would attempt to get this data”.
Officers are working “flat out” to get solutions to the “questions that are on everybody’s lips”‘ Mr Byrne stated.
When requested about his place, Mr Byrne stated management was “not about walking away”.
Earlier this week, the PSNI declared a “critical incident” after releasing data together with the surnames, initials, ranks or grades, work places and departments of all its employees as a part of a Freedom of Information (FoI) request.
The second breach concerned stolen paperwork and a laptop computer.
