Detectives of the Chinese Communist Party of China are infiltrating the University of New Zealand. Three lecturers in Chinese politics and history have had to deal with spies. Auckland University lecturer Dr Stephen Knox said that those who did not enroll in his course. They joined his class and it seems that they are gathering intelligence. Two other universities in Wellington and Christchurch have also reported similar cases.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is known to exercise tight control over what is said about China and its history, inside and outside China. Knox said that on one occasion someone took pictures of her in her lecture theatre. “There was someone in the room whom I didn’t recognize and that person was pointing at the phone and taking pictures of the slides,” he said. This put me in an uncomfortable position. After that I never saw that person again.
Detectives entering the class by becoming a scholar
Catherine Churchman, who teaches ancient Chinese history at Victoria University in Wellington, said she faced a similar situation. In 2017, while teaching a Chinese history class, a man reprimanded Churchman for the content of his lecture. Churchman said that I looked at him and thought what are you doing in my class after all? And his answer was that I am a scholar. Then I said, then you shouldn’t be here. Katherine Churchman told that he asked her to leave the class immediately.
Detectives supervise the subjects taught in class
Anne-Marie Brady, a lecturer at Canterbury University, said that she often had people who came to her class who shouldn’t be there. He told that such people used to come in my class, who were not enrolled in it. These people were either there to observe or to disturb the class. All I used to tell these people was that if you haven’t enrolled in my class and you haven’t paid the fees, you can’t be here. He told that once in 2019 I had to forcefully throw a woman out of class.
