China has made the information of its population (China Population) public. First this information was postponed for about a month. However, after this the Chinese government informed the people about the population of the country. This shows that China’s demographic situation is changing rapidly. According to the seventh nationwide census conducted in 2020, China’s population has increased by only 5.38 percent in the last 10 years.
In order to alleviate the demographic crisis, the ‘One Child Policy’ was banned in 2016. But despite this, birth rate has been steadily falling in China since 2017. Jianli Yang, president of ‘Citizen Power Initiatives for China’, wrote in the American news magazine Newsweek about how large a population needs any country. There is no standard for this. But having more young people than the elderly is beneficial for the long-term development of the country.
People are demanding the complete removal of birth restrictions
Following in the footsteps of developed countries, China has already entered the ‘middle of aging’ phase. Birth rate in China is now insufficient to deal with the aging population. Yang argues that the problem is that this aging population has not yet received enough money. He said that China’s GDP per capita has reached $ 10,000. This not only puts China far behind developed countries, but it also means that China lags behind some countries with young population. Because of this, in recent years more and more people in the country have requested the government to completely remove birth restrictions.
30 million people in China are unmarried
Yang said that the Chinese government did not allow citizens to have a second child until 2016. He said, a strict ‘one child policy’ remained in force in China for nearly 40 years before 2016. But it is not clear yet whether the ‘One Child Policy’ has achieved the CCP’s goals for China’s economic and social development. However, it is clear that due to this policy, there have been numerous human rights violations and humanitarian tragedies in China. This census report also informed that about three crore people in China are unmarried, which is more than the population of many countries.
Why crisis has arisen in China?
China’s problem is increasing due to dwindling population, as the workforce is decreasing in the country and the number of elderly people in the population is increasing. This will also increase expenditure on the health of the elderly. Due to shortage of young people, its productivity will be affected and its impact can be seen on the economy. The National Bureau of Statistics said that in the decade ending in 2020, the population of the country increased by 720 million to 1.411 billion. The average rate of annual increase in population is 0.53 percent, which has decreased from the decade before it.
