Capitol Hill Attack News: A new investigation into the violent mob attack on the US Capitol (US Parliament Building) will begin on January 6 this year, the House has approved a special committee to investigate the incident (Capitol Hill Attack Investigation). During this, those police officers were present in the house, who were injured in a clash with supporters of former President Donald Trump. The approval for the formation of the committee was given by 222 votes as against 190. Except for two members of the Republican Party, everyone else objected that the majority of the members of the committee would be from the Democratic Party.
Earlier, Republican members in the Senate had blocked the formation of an independent commission. House Speaker Democrat Nancy Pelosi told lawmakers before the vote that she wanted an independent committee to investigate the matter, but Congress can’t wait for an in-depth investigation into the more than 200-year-old Capitol attacks (America Capitol Hill Attack). Several police officers dealing with the rioters were present at the time of voting, there were also the relatives of a police officer who lost his life in that attack.
Two Republican members voted
Washington Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanon expressed displeasure over Republican members voting against an investigation into the matter. Only two Republican members voted in favor of forming the committee, one of whom is Liz Cheney, who lost her GOP leadership position for criticizing Trump (Capitol Hill Attack News). Leader of the Republican Party in the House, Kevin McCarthy, said the committee would be headed by Democrats as its chairman and at least eight of the 13 members would be appointed by Pelosi.
Trump supporters entered the building
It is noteworthy that in the US Capitol, thousands of Trump supporters tried to disrupt the joint session of Parliament by entering the Capitol Building. Under the constitutional process, the victory of newly elected President Joe Biden was to be confirmed in a joint session. Earlier, Trump had called on his supporters to “fight” at his January 6 rally. After which Trump was held responsible for the violence. He was accused of repeatedly making provocative statements.
