Warsaw: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday during a visit to Poland that Canada would give as many as possible asylum to those leaving the country because of the war in Ukraine. Trudeau said that we are heartbroken to see millions of people of Ukraine leaving the country leaving behind everything to stay alive. Trudeau said in Poland, “Canada will help, Canada is here to help you.” Poland is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which shares its border with Ukraine. About 1.5 million people have taken refuge in Poland since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24.
During talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Jakob Morawiecki, Trudeau offered Poland help in sheltering the refugees. They also discussed ways to support Ukraine and continue with tough sanctions on Russia. Trudeau also met US Vice President Kamala Harris in Warsaw. Trudeau said his government was speeding up immigration processes to allow refugees to come to Canada much sooner, where many people of Ukrainian descent live.

“When they come here, we will allow them to study, work,” Trudeau told a joint news conference with Duda. While many will hope that they will be able to return to Ukraine after the conflict is over, many would like to live further lives in countries like Canada and we will give asylum to as many people as possible. Trudeau said Canada would actively help bring Russian leaders responsible for the human tragedy, especially President Vladimir Putin, before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. (agency)
