A by-election is predicted in Greater Manchester after town’s deputy mayor introduced she was stepping down and is ready to get replaced by Labour MP Kate Green.
Ms Green, who’s the MP for Stretford and Urmston, had beforehand introduced she can be standing down as an MP on the subsequent common election, which is due in January 2025.
But it has now been introduced she’s going to substitute Baroness Bev Hughes, who has been Greater Manchester’s deputy mayor for policing, crime, legal justice and hearth since 2017.
Baroness Hughes, who was MP for Stretford and Urmston from 1997 to 2010, stated on Wednesday she’s going to step down from the position “early in the new year” and can help her predecessor “in a transitional period”.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham put ahead Ms Green to succeed her, and the Labour MP has accepted the nomination.
If Ms Green is accepted as deputy mayor by the police, hearth and crime panel as anticipated, it can set off a by-election in Stretford and Urmston.
The seat, within the southwest of Greater Manchester, is a Labour stronghold that Ms Green gained with 60.3% of the vote in 2019.

When Ms Green introduced she wouldn’t be standing once more as an MP, she stated it was “the right time for me to move on to new experiences and opportunities”.
Labour chief Sir Keir Starmer threw his help behind Ms Green in her new position.
“Kate Green has been a tireless advocate for the people of Stretford and Urmston for 12 years,” he stated.
“As the next deputy mayor of Greater Manchester, she will continue to deliver for her local community.
“Kate, I stay up for working with you in your new position.”
