A prominent critic of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and Brazilian Governor Eduardo Leite may be in the fray for the presidential election to be held in 2022. Eduardo Leite is being discussed in Brazil these days. The reason behind this is that he admitted in a TV interview that he is gay. Rio Grande do Sul state governor Leyte will be the first Brazilian presidential candidate to openly come out as gay.
The thing to note here is that Jair Bolsonaro is identified as an anti-gay leader. Anti-gay rhetoric remains central to Bolsonaro’s speeches. The Brazilian president has even once said that if he had a gay son, he would have no problem seeing him die in an accident. In such a situation, now Bolsonaro is going to face a gay candidate in next year’s presidential election.
What did Eduardo Leite say about being gay?
Talking to Brazilian journalist Pedro Biel, Eduardo Leite said, I have never talked about any topic related to my personal life. But given the current situation in Brazil, I have nothing to hide at this time. I am gay. He said, I am a governor who is gay. Jair Bolsonaro has been presenting himself as an anti-gay man. Bolsonaro, who spent three decades in Brazilian politics, has consistently cursed the LGBTQ community. At the same time, Bolsonaro has been denying the violence against him.
Leite is a member of the Social Democratic Party PSDB
As soon as the information about Eduardo Leite being gay, people started messaging him giving their support. Leite is a member of the Social Democratic Party PSDB. The PSDB extended its support to Bolsonaro in the second round during the 2018 election in Brazil. But during the COVID epidemic, the party started criticizing Bolsonaro for his way of dealing with it. Leite, 36, will be a candidate in the PSDB primary, scheduled for November, to select a presidential candidate for the 2022 elections. Other candidates in the primaries are Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria, Senator Tasso Gersati and former Senator Arthur Virgilio.
