A crew of scientists broke new floor when a aircraft able to carrying greater than 300 passengers landed in Antarctica, with aviators hailing it as a world first.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, efficiently slipped down in Troll airfield on Wednesday night time, whereas basking in Antarctica’s all-day summer season daylight.

Carrying a 45-strong crew made up of researchers and workers from the Norwegian Polar Institute, the organisation mentioned they managed to deliver 12 tonnes of analysis gear.

“This is a major operation, and a milestone for air traffic to Queen Maud Land,” mentioned the institute’s director, Camilla Brekke, referring to the situation of their analysis station.

“Taking down such a large aircraft opens up completely new possibilities for the logistics of Troll, which will also contribute to strengthening Norwegian research in Antarctica.”

Troll airfield is a 3,000-metre-long strip of blue ice and operates solely between October and March, earlier than winter units the solar for practically half a yr.

While the touchdown has been hailed as a landmark achievement, there isn’t a indication that industrial flights are deliberate, because the institute focuses on improved logistics to spice up its analysis.

The group says it arranges as much as 10 crafts of various sizes to the continent every year, however the opportunity of flying far bigger planes might cut back the variety of journeys wanted.

“The most important thing is the environmental benefits we can achieve by using large and modern aircraft of this type for Troll,” Ms Brekke mentioned.

“This can help to reduce total emissions and the environmental footprint in Antarctica.”

Norse Atlantic Airways, the airline behind the flight, mentioned in an announcement the corporate is “honoured” to have been a part of the journey.

“A historic moment for Norse,” the airline mentioned. “The first ever B787 Dreamliner to land in Antarctica! We are incredibly honoured to be part of this piece of history, marking a very special milestone for Norse.
