US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Myanmar Issue: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday urged his counterparts in Southeast Asian nations to jointly press for an end to violence in Myanmar, its return to a democratic path and the release of all political prisoners. Blinken made this appeal in a video conference that was attended by the top diplomats of the military-led country. In a meeting with representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Blinken also stressed the US’s rejection of China’s “illegal” claims in the South China Sea.
He said that the US stands in the face of China’s ‘obscenity’ with those countries which are embroiled in the sea dispute with Beijing (US on China’s claim). State Department spokesman Ned Price said Blinken’s meeting with the 10-nation group also discussed the issue of the coronavirus global pandemic as hospitals in Southeast Asian countries are full and once thriving due to rising infections. Their economy is being destroyed.
Blinken insists on ending violence
“Blinken takes joint action from ASEAN to end violence in Burma, restore its democratic transition period, and release all those unjustly detained,” Price said in a statement, using Myanmar’s old name. Appealed.’ The US and European nations have been the most vocal opponents of the military coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government from power in February.
Top members including Suu Kyi were arrested
Suu Kyi was arrested along with top members of her National League for Democracy, including President Win Myint. She is still not released and many serious charges have been leveled against her. Suu Kyi has not made any direct statement since February, but whatever is said on her behalf is told only by her lawyer. Myanmar is currently facing the Corona virus crisis. There cases are increasing and there has been a severe shortage of oxygen. Suu Kyi’s government had controlled the last two waves, but at this time the country’s command is in the hands of the army.
