Another Northern Ireland Assembly election won’t break the impasse and restore devolved authorities, DUP chief Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has stated.
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris plans to name a brand new ballot after the deadline for power-sharing handed with out settlement.
But Sir Jeffrey is urging the federal government to give attention to negotiations with the EU over the Brexit Protocol as a substitute.
In an interview for Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday, he stated: “We want to see Stormont restored as soon as possible and actually, I don’t think an election takes us closer to a solution.
“Why not use the following few weeks to double-down on getting both a negotiated resolution with the European Union or bringing ahead the laws in parliament which is able to resolve points across the Northern Ireland Protocol.
“Let’s look at what’s happened in those six months since the last assembly election. We’ve had three prime ministers, Westminster at times has been in chaos. There’s been little focus on getting a solution to the protocol.
“Talks with the EU solely began once more a few weeks in the past and even then, solely at a technical stage, not at a political stage,” he added.
The Northern Ireland Protocol established a commerce border within the Irish Sea to keep away from one between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

But unionists regard the UK’s compromise with the EU as a menace to Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom.
As overseas secretary, Liz Truss tabled the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill to unilaterally override components of the Brexit buying and selling association.
