An After School Satan Club will go forward regardless of opposition from religion and schooling leaders in Tennessee.
Around 40 members of the religion group joined leaders at Memphis-Shelby County Schools to criticise the deliberate membership and to query The Satanic Temple’s intentions in providing it.
According to native newspaper the Commercial Appeal, the protesters needed to make it clear that college students would want signed permission slips to attend and to specific assist for non secular organisations that had partnered with the district.
“You see the faith-based community standing here,” board chair and native pastor Althea Greene informed the publication.
“We’re going to stand up and we’re going to be vocal. Satan has no room in this district.”
The After School Satan Club (ASSC) is a federally recognised non-profit organisation and nationwide after-school program with native chapters throughout the US.
The membership, which is related to the Satanic Temple, plans to host classes at Chimneyrock Elementary School in Cordova from 10 January within the library.
A flyer concerning the membership describes the Satanic Temple a nontheistic faith that views Satan “as a literary figure who represents a metaphorical construct of rejecting tyranny and championing the human mind and spirit”.
It says it doesn’t try and convert youngsters to any non secular ideology however presents actions that “emphasise a scientific, rationalistic, non-superstitious worldview”.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools stated in a press release that the district would hire out the area to the non-profit organisation beneath its present guidelines.
Since the announcement, interim Superintendent Toni Williams stated some have demanded that the district ban all faith-based organisations from faculties.
She added: “As a superintendent, I am duty bound to uphold our board policy, state laws, and the Constitution.
“But let’s not be fooled. Let’s not be fooled by what we have seen up to now 24 hours, which is an agenda, initiated to make it possible for we cancel all faith-based organisations that companion with our district.”
