Popular messaging platform WhatsApp has started working under the new IT rules of the Government of India. The company has designated Paresh B Lal as Grievance Officer in India on its website. The company has taken this step after new rules related to Information Technology (IT) in the country came into effect last week. Under these rules, the leading social media intermediary (which has more than 50 lakh users) will have to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer to listen to the grievances of the users in India. These officers should be residing in India.
According to WhatsApp’s website, its users can contact its grievance officer Paresh B Lal through a post box in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad in Telangana. Big companies like Google have also started updating their website so that information about the complaint officer can be inserted in them. Google’s ‘Contact Us’ page has the address of America, Mountain View along with the details of Liaison Officer Joe Greer. In this page, the complaint settlement system has been told about YouTube.
According to the new IT rules, all major intermediaries will have to provide information about the grievance officer, his contact number, complete system of making complaints in their website, app or both. The Grievance Officer will have to confirm receipt of the complaint within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days of receiving the complaint. The Company shall resolve the same within 15 days from the date of receipt of any order, notice or direction from the Administration. Under the new rules, social media companies will have to remove any identified message within 36 hours and any marked wrongdoing, obscene material will have to be removed from their platform within 24 hours.
The Central Government has said that these rules have been prepared with the intention of preventing misuse of social media platforms and also introduced the facility of grievance redressal for its users.
