According to Reuters, this process at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, US, will start at 2:30 tonight, according to Indian time. During this, the 32-storey SLS-Orion spacecraft weighing 5.75 million tonnes will be transferred. The weather is expected to be better during this period. This system has been in the making for the last decade, due to delays in which its cost has increased. However, NASA hopes that once it is successfully launched, it will cover the delay in its development.
Artemis launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson at NASA said earlier this week that preparations are in place and we look forward to this rollout on Thursday. Once the rollout is successful, the SLS-Orion ship will be prepared for the crucial pre-flight test called ‘Wet Dress Rehearsal’. It will start from April 3, which will take two days.
Engineers plan to fully load the SLS core tank fuel with super-cooled liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants. The countdown will also take place a few seconds before the rocket’s four R-25 engines burn out.
This rollout will decide when NASA will launch its Artemis 1 mission. The purpose of the Artemis mission is to once again land humans on the Moon. Work on SLS started in the year 2010, but due to technical issues, the project faced difficulties. NASA’s ‘Artemis I’ mission was to take off in November last year. Just a month before the launch, NASA said it had pushed the timeline and the mission would be launched by mid-February. The special thing is that the mission could not be launched even in February and this date has been extended again.
