CSG is the system of the Italian government. It consists of two satellites, which observe the Earth using synthetic aperture radar. The first (CSG-1) satellite was launched on a Soyuz rocket from French Guiana in December 2019. At present it is operating at an altitude of 620 km. CSG-2 will also operate in this orbit. The system will replace the original Cosmo-Skymed system, which was launched between 2007 and 2010, with some improvements.
SpaceX tweeted a video about the current launch. It was told that the 2200 kg satellite made by Thales Alenia Space was deployed in orbit about 60 minutes after launch.
The launch was a complete success. The first stage of the mission made a soft landing at a pre-determined site just 8 minutes after liftoff. The successful landing of the first stage is very important for future missions of SpaceX. This reduces the cost of the project. Successful return of the first stage is also very important for the mission to reach Mars.
SpaceX also shared a video showing the launch of the Cosmo-SkyMed Second Generation FM2 (CSG-2) satellite.
SpaceX plans to launch 52 missions this year. If it succeeds in this, then the company will complete the highest number of launches in a year. SpaceX is also in the role of partner for the US space agency NASA, especially for NASA’s Human Spaceflight Program. It has the responsibility of transporting astronauts and cargo to and from the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX is also developing the Next Generation Rocket System to land astronauts on the Moon under NASA’s Artemis program. This rocket has been named Starship.
