Responding to a question on Bulli Bai app in Rajya Sabha by BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi, the Union Minister said, “It is important to make social media accountable. The government is committed to ensure the safety of women everywhere, including the Internet.” Modi had asked questions about activities against women on various websites, including the Bulli Bai app.
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote a letter to the IT Minister raising the issue of auction of women from Muslim community on the app. After this, the police in Delhi and Mumbai took action against the people running this app. Some arrests have also been made in this case. A student was among those arrested.
Sections under IPC and Information Technology Act have been imposed in this case. Some opposition parties and organizations, including Shiv Sena, had protested against this app. Some such cases have come to the fore in the past in which attempts were made to harass through such apps. However, in such cases, sometimes the police find it difficult to take action against the accused due to the app being run from abroad. The Delhi Police had acted on a complaint lodged by a woman journalist at the Cyber Police Station. The woman journalist had alleged that her photo has been uploaded on a website and she is being targeted through it. The complainant had demanded immediate registration of FIR and investigation. The complaint was lodged against unknown persons who are trying to harass Muslim women on social media and internet.<!–
