In an important development, the High Court of Pakistan has temporarily banned Tiktok. Hearing a petition against the Chinese video-sharing app, the Sindh High Court directed the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to suspend the Chinese app until the next hearing, which is scheduled for July 8. The app has been temporarily suspended on the ground that it is ‘spreading immorality and obscenity’ in the country.
Let us tell you that this is the second time that the app has been banned in the country this year. In March, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) took a similar action on a petition filed by several citizens. However, the PHC lifted the ban after a few weeks, asking the PTA to take measures so that no “immoral content” is uploaded. In October, the PTA first banned TikTok after receiving complaints about obscene and immoral content, but lifted the ban after 10 days.
It was banned before
Pakistan has long relations with China since 1951. The two countries have not only repeatedly shown military cooperation, but have also cooperated in economic-social fields. TikTok, known as Douyin in China, is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
Court’s answer
The court said in its order that the app company is neither respecting nor following the rules and laws of Pakistan. The company has completely failed to comply with both the things. The company has also completely failed to understand Islam and the culture of Pakistan. Let us tell you that there are 30 million i.e. 30 million users of Tiktok in Pakistan.
Many countries have banned
So far, many countries have banned the platform or threatened to ban it. In June 2019, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned TikTok saying they were “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the state and public order”, and the ban in January 2020 was made permanent.
