Amid growing criticism over the new privacy policy, WhatsApp has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against it. WhatsApp alleged in its petition that most applications and websites have similar policies and they collect more data than WhatsApp.
Facebook-owned messaging apps named companies including Zomato, BigBasket, Ola, Koo, Truecaller, Aarogya Setu and accused them of collecting more user data. According to a report by Inc42, WhatsApp filed a petition in the Delhi High Court on 5 May. The instant messaging app has claimed that some popular apps collect data from the same or more users.
WhatsApp has also named major tech companies in its petition including Microsoft, Google, Zoom. Interestingly, the digital branch of Republic TV has also been accused of collecting data from more users.
Many apps and website policy like WhatsApp
WhatsApp said in its affidavit, “A review of the privacy policy of many Internet-based applications and websites confirms that such a policy contains provisions detailing details of the information they can collect. Which is similar to WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy update.
WhatsApp has mentioned in its affidavit that if it is not allowed to implement its new privacy policy, it will disrupt other tech companies operating in the country. Primarily, companies which provide delivery of groceries and other facilities. This has been said in response to a petition filed against WhatsApp by the Delhi High Court in January. In which the court has said that the option to accept the new privacy policy is voluntary, any person can choose not to use the app if they do not agree to the terms.
Users will not be able to use essential features
Obviously, WhatsApp’s deadline to accept the new privacy policy is just one day away, but the company had recently made some big announcements. WhatsApp updated on its FAQ page that it will not delete users’ accounts if the new privacy policy is not accepted. However, if users fail to accept the policy after continuous reminders, they will be able to use the “Limited” feature. After a few more weeks, WhatsApp will take away some essential features.
