New Delhi. Microsoft came with its dual-screen smartphone Surface Duo in September 2021 this year. The device is based on the company’s vision that came with its earlier Surface Duo. The idea is to have two large displays instead of one, both joined together via a hinge. However, a new patent suggests that Microsoft may be looking to add another screen to the mix.
A new patent filed by Microsoft in the US shows a new smartphone design with a total of three displays. As we see on the Surface Duo 2, the display is arranged in a compact format and can be folded inside a single smartphone form. This is done through a total of two hinges between the screens.
For those who don’t know about the Surface Duo 2, they should know that Microsoft’s smartphone still follows the same design as the previous one, without the additional display. As of now, it sports two displays, with a hinge in the middle.
When you take it out of the pocket or basically use it without opening it, there’s no display area left for you to interact with because both displays are folded in. You have to open the phone to use any of these. This makes the Surface Duo 2 completely useless for single-handed operation, or basically, when using it as a regular smartphone.
The new patent published by Microsoft on December 23 shows a schematic plan of how a triple-screen smartphone might work. The devices offered by Microsoft can have three displays connected through two hinges in the middle. The phone will open as a piece of paper folded to convert it into a larger display.
Such a phone can prove to be a game-changer for the foldable smartphone market. Of course, it will be different in appearance like other foldable phones. However, if it manages to provide a seamless and creaseless foldable display experience, it will not take long for other OEMs to adopt the technology.
