Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it would be shutting down its face recognition system. But now, the social network’s parent company Meta said it will continue to use the same system for its Metaverse products.
As Recode reports, Meta is already exploring ways to incorporate biometrics into its emerging Metaverse business, which aims to create virtual, Internet-based simulations where people can interact as avatars. “We believe this technology has the potential to enable future positive use cases that maintain privacy, control and transparency,” Meta spokesperson Jason Gross told Recode.
It’s an approach we’ll continue to explore as we look at how our future computing platforms and devices can meet people’s needs.
Meta will continue to use biometric tools
According to the report, Meta will continue to use a variety of biometric tools, including DeepFace, an artificial intelligence technology that matches user photos with advanced facial templates by Facebook’s face recognition system.
Facebook has been doing facial recognition since 2011
Facebook Face Recognition used to analyze photos and videos that the company believed a user was on Facebook and it changed the tag suggestion setting on the social network. Facial recognition has been available on Facebook since 2011 and Facebook automatically enabled the feature for over 500 million people at that time.
Facebook rebranded its name
Let us tell you that Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebrand. The company said it will better incorporate what it does as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR).
