Instagram has announced new campaigns to spread awareness about the safety features and “Legal Rights and Protections” available on the platform. These campaigns will also include a variety of creators who will appear in multilingual content to help youth across the country.
Madhu Sirohi, Head of Policy Program, Facebook India, said, “We wanted to create awareness locally on how to make our community feel safe online. With ‘Safe Stree’ and ‘My Law’, we are doing this by continuously raising awareness about our security features and notifying youth about the rights and protections available to them under the law.”
What is ‘Safe Stree’ campaign
In partnership with Yuva, a platform to understand women’s rights and laws, Instagram has launched a ‘Safe Stree’ campaign to challenge gender stereotypes and create a safer and better online space for women. This campaign will run for one month and will run in two parts.
The social media platform will first run a 6-part training program for creators on how to create a more inclusive space. It will then upload a content series on the reels that will highlight the safety features available to women on Instagram.
A total of 30 reels in this series will be posted in their original languages by a set of 6 creators including Amrita Suresh, Poornima Ravi, Antara Naina Roy Majumdar, Tanya Apachu, Maitrayani Mahant and Samruddhi Patil. It will be live through the Instagram account of related creators.
‘My Law’ campaign
In partnership with Nykaa and We The Young, Instagram will also run a ‘My Law’ campaign to “simplify and explain laws to young people”. This will help users to control Instagram’s safety and their caregivers to take legal action and communicate with the justice system.
The campaign will run for about three months and will include over 50 content by young content makers on topics such as online violence, bullying, harassment, child sexual abuse and children who violate the law.
